A team of former rugby players will swap their rugby boots for running shoes next month as they take on the challenge of running the Bath Half Marathon to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Jon Baker, a director at engineering company, CH2M Hill will be leading a team of former rugby players around the fast but demanding course, in the event’s corporate challenge for business teams. His team include former England international and Bath player Danny Grewcock and Matt Powell, a former Saracens and Harlequins player who is currently Business Development Director for Bath Rugby.
Danny Grewcock commented: “This is my first time running the Bath Half and being used to my team sports, I’m really looking forward to running alongside the others as part of a corporate challenge team.
“Personally, the move from the rugby pitch to the streets of Bath will be a big challenge for me as it’s not something I’m used to doing. Bath is famed for being a fantastic flat course with a mass of entertainment around the route which I know will help me through”.
Jon said: “We’re running the Bath Half Marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support as my brother in law, Michael, passed away to lung cancer in 2011.
“Macmillan really supported our entire family throughout his diagnosis, treatment and afterwards. He was like an older brother to me, being ten years older, he guided me throughout my career and helped me find the right path in life. He was such a family man; he tragically left behind five children.
“At CH2M Hill we work in partnership with Bath Rugby so it seemed a great opportunity to involve the guys in our fundraising effort. We’ve all been training for it, as we’re determined to reach our target of 2 hours and 15 minutes or under.”
The Bath Half Marathon is one of the longest established and most popular city centre road events in the UK and it is also one of the biggest fundraisers in the South West, raising over £1.5 million for charity last year alone.
The Bath Half Corporate Challenge is one of the largest business team running events in the UK, with over 70 teams set to compete in 2012.
Entries for this year’s event, which takes place on Sunday 11 March closed several months ago. For more information on the event, go to www.bathhalf.co.uk.
