Stairgates in wonky Victorian houses?

Advice on stairgates please. Got a screw fit one but with the skirting, banister, stairs etc all factors against it it seems. What ones do you have?

We have a screw to the wall one. But DH had to make a mounting bracket for the walls, as we have skirting and stair risers, he marked it out so that when it's screwed to the wall it makes it level for the stairgate to attach to. We have waxed it to match the rest of the woodwork.
